Teaching Career Pathway

Whitstone School: Staff Development

At Whitstone School, staff development is central to everything we do. It is the golden thread that runs through every stage of a career, from recruitment through to leadership and beyond. We are passionate about supporting all staff to grow, thrive and achieve excellence.

Recruitment and Induction

Our approach begins with recruitment and induction. All new staff take part in a carefully planned induction programme led by a key member of our team. This ensures they are welcomed, supported and equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed from their very first day. The full recruitment process is illustrated in the flow chart at the bottom of the page, which outlines each stage from initial advertising to appointment.

Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Teachers

We recognise that staff enter the profession at different stages. We welcome initial teacher trainees (ITTs) from a range of external providers, including Bath Spa University and SCITT, to ensure robust preparation and a diverse learning experience. For early career teachers (ECTs), we partner with 5 Counties as our ECT provider, offering structured support, mentorship and professional guidance. More experienced staff are supported through targeted CPD that builds on their existing expertise.

Continuing Professional Development

Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) offer is structured around the principles of Build, Enhance, Sustain. Staff are supported to build foundational skills, enhance their practice through ongoing learning and challenge, and sustain high-quality performance over time. Our CPD includes opportunities such as National Professional Qualifications (NPQs), leadership development programmes and bespoke internal training sessions. Our CPD strategy can be found using the link at the bottom of the page.

Career-Long Growth

At Whitstone School, our appraisal system encourages staff to identify and pursue professional development opportunities aligned with their aspirations and career stage. We are committed to creating a culture in which staff are empowered to take ownership of their growth, continuously refine their practice and achieve excellence at every stage of their career. Professional development is inclusive, dynamic and continuous, supporting all staff to thrive and contribute to the success of our school community.

Staff development at Whitstone School is not a one-off process. It is a career-long journey that underpins both personal growth and the outstanding education we provide to our students.
