Academic Interventions

Identification

We use a range of methods to identify areas of need.

This could be student or parent feedback, assessment data, reading age data and testing, Sparx data or a member of staff may refer a student for further investigation or support.

Aims

Our aims for academic interventions may vary, dependent on students’ specific needs and areas for development. The overarching aim however remains the same: supporting students to be confident, competent learners who feel able to succeed in the classroom.

In school we use a range of screeners and assessments to find out more about students and their individual needs. These include but are not limited to:

  • Access Reading Test
  • Sparx Reading Age
  • GL Dyslexia screener
  • GL Dycalculia screener
  • Sandwell Numeracy investigation
  • Read Write Inc Fresh Start Phonics screener
  • British Picture Vocabulary Screener
  • Wide Range Achievement Test 5th Edition
  • Helen Arkell Spelling assessments

Dependent on the outcomes of these tests, parents and carers will receive a letter informing them of the results. This letter may set out that there is no further investigation needed; suggest strategies for support at home and in school and in some instances, will offer bespoke intervention for individuals or small groups.

Interventions we offer

Our interventions in school are bespoke and run by our expert Literacy and Numeracy staff.

Literacy Interventions include:

  • Sound Linkage
  • Read Write Inc Fresh Start Phonics
  • Talisman reading intervention
  • SNIP Literacy Intervention programme

Our Numeracy Interventions focus on the foundational skills needed to be confident mathematicians. We create bespoke packages of support based on resources from:

  • Sparx
  • White Rose Maths

Tracking Progress

Students complete 12 week programmes for Literacy intervention. Progress is monitored and ongoing. At the end of the 12 weeks, students are retested to monitor the impact of the intervention.

Numeracy intervention currently runs slightly differently; it is ongoing and built into SEND student timetables as part of their provision. Outcomes are monitored through what students can do that they couldn’t do previously; their skills growing and confidence in the classroom.
