We believe that exposure to the Arts is essential if we are to provide a rounded education for our students. All our students will experience art from a variety of sources and cultures, with the aim to inspire and develop artistic and creative young people. The Art Department encourages a wealth of creativity, where students can experiment in a wide range of media and techniques including street art, typography, print and sculpture as well as more traditional painting and drawing materials.

At KS4 students will develop a broad and skilled understanding of the creative art and design sector, enhancing their knowledge of techniques and processes. This allows students to respond to focused assignment briefs, develop ideas within a particular discipline and produce art and design outcomes. The GCSE qualification consists of two mandatory projects making up 60% of the qualification and an external set exam project (40%). The mandatory projects provide the essential knowledge and skills for the sector, while the exam project provides the opportunity to choose from a range of techniques and briefs. Work is presented as an ongoing sketchbook portfolio.

This course will provide a sound basis for progression for those students who wish to study a related qualification within further education or an apprenticeship and/ or progress into a career in the creative industries.

We hope that our students’ enjoyment of school life will be enhanced and that they develop personal skills and a cultural appreciation of the Arts that will last a lifetime. All students will experience a well-balanced and comprehensive curriculum that enhances informed, intellectual, developmental and moral character. As a result, this will improve life chances, interpersonal relationships, social mobility and preparedness for employment. Our curriculum will encourage students to have a positive impact on society.
