Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE)

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics Mission Statement

At Whitstone School, our Religion, Philosophy and Ethics curriculum inspires curiosity, critical thinking, and empathy. We provide all students with a strong understanding of the world’s main religions, ethical theories, philosophical ideas, and cultural diversity. This equips our young people to reflect thoughtfully on their own beliefs and to engage respectfully with the beliefs of others. Through inquiry, dialogue, and ethical exploration, we foster students’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, support British values, and prepare learners to navigate a diverse and interconnected world with integrity, understanding, and insight.

Success in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics means that every student leaves Whitstone School with a sound grasp of world religions and other worldviews, alongside well-developed skills in empathy, tolerance, and respect for difference and diversity in modern Britain and the wider world. Students studying Religion, Philosophy and Ethics at GCSE level and beyond develop the ability to weigh up different viewpoints, assess the strengths and weaknesses of arguments, and evaluate evidence critically. They also build key transferable skills, such as diplomacy, advocacy, reflection, cultural awareness, and confidence in articulating and defending their views respectfully.

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics, alongside other curriculum areas such as PSHE, contributes significantly to students’ moral, spiritual, and social development. It encourages responsible and caring attitudes and supports students in developing a deeper awareness and understanding of themselves and others.

At Whitstone School, we align our approach with Ofsted’s vision for Religious Education in UK schools, recognising that RE should be “intellectually challenging and personally enriching.” We believe it helps young people develop their beliefs and values and promotes the virtues of respect and empathy, which are essential in our diverse society.
